Producers and filmmakers Dominique Unsworth MBE and Lesley-Anne MacFarlane share their thoughts
Cannes is one of the leading film festivals internationally and an influential gathering point for the global film industry.
For indie filmmakers, Cannes offers unparalleled access. From the official selection and prestigious sidebars like Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week, to the bustling Marché du Film, the festival is filled with opportunities to connect with producers, distributors, sales agents, and fellow filmmakers. It’s a place to be seen, to connect, and to grow.
Top 3 things to plan ahead of going to Cannes:
Organise Your Schedule
Review the official programme from Cannes, Screen UK (at the UK Pavilion), and other participating organisations. Prioritise the panels, workshops, screenings, and networking events you want to attend, and block time in your calendar. Be sure to book meetings with key contacts well in advance—diaries fill up quickly!
Let People Know You’re Attending
Spread the word—share your plans on social media or within your professional networks. You might discover invite-only or under-the-radar events through word of mouth, and it’s a great way to reconnect with others who will also be there.
Sort Out Your Logistics Early
Accommodation in Cannes books up fast and gets expensive closer to the event, so secure your place early. When choosing where to stay, think beyond price—consider how easily you can get to and from your accommodation. Do you want the option of being close by to take breaks, or are you happy staying out from morning until late?
Things to avoid
Don’t Wing It - Cannes is hectic and can be quite full on. Events are spread across multiple venues and without a clear plan, it’s easy to miss out on key panels, screenings, or networking opportunities.
Don’t Be Overly Aggressive with Networking - While Cannes is a great place to make connections, pushing too hard or unsolicited pitching can backfire.
Don’t Ignore the Dress Code - Cannes has a reputation for glamour, and red carpet premieres have dress codes that are quite strict. Pack appropriately: smart casual for day events (trainers are recommended!) and formal wear for evening premieres.
